A stem-up butterfly valve features a valve stem that protrudes above the valve's body and is connected to the disc through a two-piece design. This construction is engineered to protect the stem from corrosive media while ensuring strength and torsional rigidity.
Key components and function
Disc: A circular plate that rotates within the valve body to control flow. In the open position, it is parallel to the flow. When closed, it turns perpendicular, with its precision-milled profile providing a tight seal against the seat.
Two-piece stem: The key feature of this design is its two-piece stem, which is precisely guided by bushings and O-rings.
Upper stem: This part extends from the valve body and connects to the actuator (lever, gearbox, etc.). It remains isolated from the media flowing through the valve.
Lower stem: This part connects directly to the disc. In this split-stem design, the lower stem is a short piece, separate from the upper stem, which also helps protect the stem seals.
Seat: The seal, often an elastomeric material like rubber, lines the inner diameter of the valve body. It extends onto the contact faces to ensure a tight seal with the disc and eliminates the need for separate flange gaskets
